NEW DATE - December 15th - ONE MORE FERRY CELEBRATION!

  • Surry County, VA Historical Society 281 Bank Street Surry, VA, 23883 United States (map)

NEW DATE - Everyone Welcome! Monday, December 15, at Surry Ruritan Club!

The Surry County Historical Society’s program on Monday, Dec. 8, at the Surry Ruritan Club Building, will again celebrate the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry! Mr. Jester’s Ferry has celebrated its 100 th Anniversary in 2025, and we would like to end the year with one more night of recognition for the ferry, its founder and staff, and the many trips the boats have taken across the James River.

Please join us as Frank Jester and Bill Fox share a Power Point presentation on the history of the ferry in the last one hundred years. See times below!

We will follow with a “Panel Talk” from several local current and former community members who worked on the various ferries over the years. They will share stories of many adventures with the various Captains! Some of “what happened on the River, stays on the River,” but they have interesting and funny stories to tell about navigating the ferry boats from one dock to another! Melvin Younglove, Bucky Stewart, Rev. Welton Blount, Sr. and Homer Lanier have plenty of memories to share from their own work on the ferries and in the Ferry Office, as well as from the Captains with whom they worked! We will have some pictures from Homer Lanier and memorabilia on display, too! If you have pictures or other items to share, please bring them to the program at the Ruritan Building!
