Books of Interest - January 2021

The Surry County Historical Society has a new book for sale! Patricia Johnson Hall, of Smithfield, and formerly of Surry, has written her mother’s family history. Her book, Scott’s A’Mulshun, focuses on the Kincaid Family, which was in the Summers-Greenbrier, West Virginia area in the 1770s and before. Mrs. Hall tells of her ancestor’s lives back in West Virginia, including the story of how her mother, Marjorie Kindcaid met Albert Sidney Johnson, from Surry, VA. Albert just happened to come to Alderson, WV, on a job to help build a women’s penitentiary. His guy friends called him “Johnson,” and so that’s what Margie Kincaid called him, eventually marrying him!

The book follows their life in Alderson and the move back to Surry County. When Pat was born, her parents lived in the Oak Grove Methodist Parsonage, just outside the town of Surry. She continues her story through those years and through her marriage to her husband, Frank Hall, of Smithfield!  Can you believe the Surry teachers who lived in Smithfield would give the girls a ride to Smithfield on Friday so they could meet their dates, saving them the trip to Surry?!!

You must read to the end of the book to find out where the name comes from and how she chose it for the title. She’s done a great job of telling her family story, as well as mentioning interesting events and places right here in Surry County!

Books may be purchased on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m -4 p.m. at the building for $15.00 for the book or by mail for $18.  Requests may be sent to our P. O Box 262, Surry, VA 23883.
