Ed Hale and Connie Lapallo will tell us about the Captain John Smith National Historic Trail. Captain Smith published his book, " A Map of Virginia," in 1612 and on his map are placed 27 Maltese crosses that are meant to mark the extent of his exploration up the tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay.
The Captain John Smith National Historic Trail celebrates Smith’s two-year exploration of the bay and is the nation's first all water national historic trail. Initiated by the Chesapeake Conservancy, a project was set forth to locate the likely locations of these crosses and to mark them with modern markers so present-day explorers can visit these historic places.
The public is invited!
